Batman’s First Movie Everyone FORGOT

April 28, 2023

The 1943 Batman serial was the first ever live depiction of Batman in a movie, featuring actor Lewis Wilson as Batman/Bruce Wayne and Douglas Croft as Robin/Dick Grayson. The movie was a serial spread out between 15 chapters, which were screened at movie theaters for one week, and ended with a cliffhanger to entice viewers to return the following week. The serial blended Batman comic mythology, World War II propaganda, and predictable cliffhanger conventions, with Batman and Robin pursuing the malevolent Japanese criminal mastermind, Dr. Daka. The film has been criticized for its racist portrayal of Dr. Daka and its reinforcement of Yellow Peril paranoia. Despite its low production values and unimpressive action sequences, the serial gave audiences the first-ever look at the Batcave and Alfred, and expanded on the Batman mythos.
